The course
Bust modeling at Sarlat
This summer, we subscribed to a sculpture course at the Werken atelier at Sarlat.
In 2 sessions, we learned how to model the volume of a face and then sculpt the main parts of the face (eyes, mouth, nose, ears) ending with the hair.
During every phase, we were guided by the teacher, with great patience and kindness.
As there were only the 5 of us, the session was a very interactive lesson.
The process
3 phases of work
To paint something different, I started from sketches, drawn by Loriane and me on digital tablet.
I then transposed this drawing on Illustrator to have very smooth curves, and perfect gradients.
Finally, I used this model to paint the watercolor, on 50X40 cm.
The initial idea comes from the bust sculpture course that we took in 2 sessions in Sarlat this summer.
Gabrielle could not join, so to representing the from a picture was not possible.
We have therefore drawn up portraits, exchanged our impressions of draughtsmen. I drew Gabrielle, Loriane the other 2 characters.
It was the first time I used Illustrator of Adobe. I followed a 400-pages tutorial in 15 sessions of about an hour each to learn the fundamentals.
A drawing like this includes more than a hundred layers. Each line is vectorized with smoothed curves.
One can easily balance the colors to create an ambiance.
The painting
Painting of the watercolour
It is not obvious to paint a model according to Illustrator: it is difficult to get perfect gradients such as those copmposed by the computer.
On Illustrator, you can choose the type of gradient (linear or radial) and as many intermediate colors as desired. Layers can be layered to the desired result.
For watercolor, each brush stroke is seen, and the rendering is fixed only after several hours, depending on the quantity of pigments, their fusion in water ...
One more constraint, I decided to film the painting, to make an live-painting video. I bought a special pod to fix the camera in vertical. I will still need to adjust the lighting for a very clean look (next time ).
